GSM entails the use of SIM card, which can be removed and replaced when needed. Phones that use the GSM network may be unlocked. CDMA is another network technology used by some popular cellular service providers. CDMA was developed in England during World War II. It is different from GSM in that it spreads voice data over multiple frequency bands for additional security.
