Unlocked Phones
We can all agree. Nearly everyone has a cell phone. Many people acquire the actual, physical cell phone by signing up for a plan. Because they buy the plan-phone package, they benefit from huge discounts on the price of the phone handset. In fact, most people don't know how much the handsets cost. It's quite a bit more than they pay in these cases. So, we can also agree that that's very nice.
So now, a person has purchased a phone and a plan. He owns the cell phone. But when he wants to switch providers for some special reason (travel out of normal range is a common one), he may find that his phone is locked against the use of other SIM cards. This is discouraging to our user, because the cell phone is his. He just wants to make the most economical and reasonable choice in plans.
Should he suck it up and accept poor reception and astronomical rates on his own plan in another country? No, of course not. What options are available to this user? The answer is simple: he needs an unlocked phone. If he currently uses a GSM network phone, he may be able to unlock it. Otherwise, it is possible for him to buy an unlocked phone from a local dealer or online.
